Kingfisher #9

Look what arrived on my doorstep a week and a half early! Woodinville PRINT did an amazing job with this issue, and I’m grateful for their speed, though it means I’ll be rearranging my schedule this week to mail copies ASAP. If you haven’t yet ordered yours, please do so here: https://kingfisherjournal.com/shop/ When I order a print run, that’s all the copies there are of a particular issue, so when they sell out, they’re gone (or available only as pdfs). So get ’em while you can! Thanks for your support of the journal!

And yes, that is a LEGO® kingfisher on the cover. It was released in the U.S. on February 1, the day that submissions opened for this issue. From the moment I saw it, I knew it would be my cover art for this year. It took me hours and hours of carefully following the instructions to build it, but I’m very pleased with how it turned out. I then took nearly 200 photos of the model in various environments and with a variety of backgrounds. At one point, it was half-submerged in a creek. Ultimately, I decided to place it in front of one of my many silk scarves. If you feel like tackling the 834-piece set, you can order yours here: https://www.lego.com/en-us/product/kingfisher-bird-10331 For folks in other countries, just search for “lego” and “kingfisher” and it should pop up. My thanks to Lew for the suggestion to scatter a few loose pieces in front of the model.
