The 13th issue of Kingfisher has arrived, and isn’t it a beauty? My deepest thanks to Oregon artist and wildlife rehabilitator, Erin M Linton for the use of her art on this year’s cover. I’ve been an admirer of her art for years, and I fell in love with this green kingfisher when I saw her working on the original painting at a local art fair. She has several beautiful paintings of belted kingfishers, too, but I wanted a kingfisher I hadn’t yet featured on a cover. If you’re as enamored with the cover as I am, please check out Erin’s website for more information about her art and the wildlife rehab center where she volunteers: https://www.orphangirlfineart.com
Copies of #13 were mailed last week and have been arriving in mailboxes near and far. If you haven’t ordered a copy or subscription yet, you can do so here: https://kingfisherjournal.com/shop/ Rates are the same as last year.
Thank you for supporting this independent print journal. Publishing each issue feels like a small act of resistance against so much in this world that is overwhelming, and I hope that holding it in your hand and reading it—maybe all at once, maybe in small doses—feels like resistance, too. When you read it, you’re taking the time to appreciate how another poet experienced something. Maybe their observation is something that you yourself have noticed or felt, or perhaps it’s new to you. They are sharing with you, and that act of sharing, be it among friends or among strangers, is a way to keep us connected and engaged with our world in a time when it’s difficult to be present. I hope you enjoy the 181 haiku and senryu that I’ve selected for this issue, and that they inspire you to write your own.
Love the cover… mine arrived a few days ago and I am savoring it slowly! 👏🏻👏🏻
